Student artwork from six schools was on display at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton.

Student artwork from six local schools was featured during the South County Pyramid Art Show held for the first time last week at the Workhouse Arts Center, Building W-16, in Lorton. The artwork came from student artists at Laurel Hill Elementary, Newington Forest Elementary, Silverbrook Elementary, Halley Elementary, South County Middle School, and South County High School.

Herndon Turkey Trot Race a Success

Some 858 runners participate in pre-Thanksgiving tradition at Herndon Community Center.

The first-place male winner was James Luehrs, 23, of Reston, who finished with a time of 16:16. He is Herndon High School's cross country and distance track coach. Some 858 runners participated in The Turkey Trot 5K Race sponsored by the Herndon Parks and Recreation Department on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Herndon Community Center. The race wound around the Herndon Centennial Golf Course.

Fundraiser for 4-year-old girl named 'Ava B,' a leukemia survivor.

“Ava B” of Fairfax Corner was a typical 2-year-old when she fell ill with leukemia on Dec. 9, 2011. After having a fever for four days, her mom “Jeannie B” took to a doctor and ran a few tests. A hematologist then confirmed that she had Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. (The family asked that their last name not be used.)
